Date: |
17 December 2012 (Monday) |
Time: |
07:00 pm - 08:30 pm |
Venue: |
Room B5‐311 (AC1), City University of Hong Kong, Kowloon Tong, Kowloon, Hong Kong The room is located at 5/F of AC1, please take Lift‐3 to access it. |
Programme Highlights:
In Taiwan, there are three nuclear power plants with six units in operation now sharing about 20% of electricity. The safety and operational performance of these units has been excellent. The new energy policy after the Fukushima accident and its impact on nuclear power development in Taiwan will be addressed in the talk.
Speaker:
Professor Chin Pan
Distinguished Professor,
Department of Engineering and System Science, and Institute of Nuclear Science and Engineering,
National Tsing Hua University.
Dr. Pan received his BS degree in nuclear engineering from National Tsing Hua University in 1979, MS and Ph.D
degrees in nuclear engineering from University of Illinois at Urbana‐Champaign (UIUC) in 1983 and 1985,
respectively. He served as the Chairman of the Department of Engineering and System Science of NTHU from
February, 2001 to January, 2004 and the Director of the Center for Energy and Environmental Research from
December 2003 to July 2008. Dr. Pan was the Dean of College of Nuclear Science from August 2005 to July 2011.
He has been serving as chairman of the Advisory Committee of Nuclear Safety in the Atomic Energy Council since
October, 2008. He is now the Chief Principal Investigator (Director) of the Low Carbon Energy Center, a center of
excellence at NTHU funded by the Ministry of Education through the “Plan to Develop World‐Class Universities
and Top‐Notch Research Centers”. He has also been the President of Chung‐Hwa Nuclear Society since the
beginning of 2012. Dr. Pan’s research activities for the past two decades have been in the areas of two‐phase
flow, boiling heat transfer and energy engineering. He received a distinguished research award in 1998 and three
excellent research awards earlier from the National Science Council of Taiwan, ROC. |

Symposium on Nuclear Safety and Risk: Challenges and Opportunities
Introduction:
The safety review reports, issued by China in mid June 2012, concluded that both nuclear power stations in operation and under construction are in compliance with national safety regulations and International Atomic Energy Agency standards. This means that the rapid expansion of the commercial nuclear power programme in the Pearl-River Delta region will likely continue. In view of this, the Hong Kong Nuclear Society organizes this symposium, as part of its Inauguration Events, to explore the safe application of nuclear energy and associated risks. Invited local and overseas experts will share their views on the challenges and opportunities associated with the latest nuclear development in the region.
Date: |
Saturday, 15 September 2012 |
Time: |
13:30 to 18:30 |
Venue: |
Lecture Room LT401, City University of Hong Kong, Kowloon Tong, Kowloon, Hong Kong |
